Responding When a Client Asks About Cash Drag
Help portfolio specialists turn a concern about cash drag into a documented review of the mandate, flows, and reporting.
Cash drag is a loaded phrase because it can sound like an accusation or a request to deploy money immediately. A portfolio specialist can lower the temperature by asking what report, period, and mandate instruction the client is reviewing. The discussion should clarify facts about balances and flows before anyone attributes intent or predicts the impact of a future investment decision.
A treasurer says, “Why are we sitting on cash while the market rises?” The specialist can answer, “I hear the concern. Which account period and cash balance are you comparing, and were there pending distributions or instructions during that window?” If the treasurer mentions an upcoming payment, the specialist continues, “I will confirm the account records and the mandate’s cash parameters with the relevant teams. We can then review what the report shows and identify any decisions that belong with your authorized governance process.”
Do not promise that deploying cash will improve returns, and do not assume a balance is unintentional. Cash may reflect client flows, restrictions, trading, or operations. A useful follow-up separates reported cash, known client directions, and questions requiring confirmation. Name the person who can resolve each one.
Use a call simulation where the client gives incomplete facts and presses for a market view. The rep should ask two verification questions and offer a defined reporting review. Coaches can evaluate whether the rep turned a complaint about performance into an agenda for reviewing the process. That response protects the client relationship because it treats the concern seriously without inventing a quick answer.
