Answer Consultant ESG Data Requests by Defining the Terms
Guide consultant relations professionals through methodology questions that use different ESG definitions.
An ESG data request becomes risky when both sides use familiar labels for different calculations, screens, or source dates. Consultant relations should slow the conversation down enough to define the requested field. This is more useful than claiming a strategy meets a broad sustainability standard.
Ask the consultant which definition, period, and reporting format their client requires. Determine whether they need a methodology document, a data point, or an explanation of a limitation. Match each response to an approved source, and route questions that exceed available documentation to the data and compliance owners.
An ESG lead says, “Can you confirm this portfolio meets our exclusion standard?” The professional replies, “I can explain the methodology in our approved materials and compare the definitions once we have your standard. I should not certify alignment before that comparison. Could you send the criteria and the reporting date you need, so our data team can identify the appropriate source?” The lead agrees and notes that regional requirements may differ.
The recap should preserve the consultant’s wording. Include the requested date, definitions, source owner, and any questions about a particular client. That record prevents an old report from being presented as a current answer.
In a coaching drill, change one word in the consultant’s definition halfway through the conversation. The rep should notice the difference and clarify it. Review whether they avoid broad ESG language, distinguish evidence from interpretation, and set a realistic follow-up using approved materials.
