Improve a Treasury Account Reconciliation Conversation
Use a recent close to identify the real source of reconciliation effort.
Reconciliation complaints often start with, “The reports take too long.” A treasury specialist should learn where time actually goes before suggesting a path for review. Ask the finance team to walk through its most recent close: when data is collected, which file is used, who resolves differences, and which exceptions return each month. This produces facts that a generic reporting request cannot.
Atlas Engineering says its controller spends two days reconciling several accounts. The specialist learns that the bank file arrives on time, but the team manually maps payment references into its accounting system. She asks for a sample of the mapping work and the name of the system administrator. She does not promise that a file format, integration, or service will reduce close time.
Identify the measurable pain point. It may be missing reference fields, late internal approvals, duplicate data entry, or a mismatch between two systems. The customer owns its accounting procedures and should decide any internal workflow changes. The specialist can document the bank data needs and connect the team to appropriate technical or service review channels.
End with a baseline: accounts covered, hours spent, recurring exception types, and desired result. Ask what a successful close would let the team do differently. This avoids treating a new report as a goal in itself. A clear discovery record helps any follow-up focus on the customer’s actual process, while keeping service availability and technical feasibility subject to current bank information and review. Revisit the baseline after a busy month to catch seasonal variation.
