Build an Account Review Around an Institution's Research Roadmap
Prepare an executive working session that connects stated priorities with the centers and stakeholders involved.
An institutional roadmap discussion should begin with the customer’s stated priorities. A strategic account manager can create a useful working session by connecting research leaders, center directors, procurement, and support owners around an agenda that the institution recognizes.
Ask which research centers are included in the next planning cycle, which priorities are published or confirmed, and what decisions the executive group expects to make. Map existing lab relationships and unresolved service or adoption topics without presenting them as a verdict on investment. Identify the people who can explain center needs and the people who own procurement or governance constraints.
In a fictional preparation call, an associate vice president asks, “Which center should receive investment first?” The account manager replies, “That priority belongs with your governance process. Could we use the working session to understand the centers in scope, their stated objectives, and the decisions you need to prepare for?” The leader explains that two centers have not yet been included, so an early recommendation would have been premature.
Practice by turning a vague executive request into a short agenda with decision questions, attendees, and evidence needed. Review whether every contribution from the account team is anchored to verified customer context. The meeting helps leaders organize their own choices and keeps decision authority with them.
