Qualify a Zero Trust Initiative Through Its First Use Case
Turn broad zero trust language into a specific access or segmentation question the customer needs to resolve.
Zero trust can describe a wide program, a policy goal, or a specific project. An account executive should not treat the phrase as a complete opportunity definition. Ask which user, device, application, or network journey creates the most immediate concern.
The first use case may involve contractor access, privileged administration, a sensitive application, or segmentation between environments. Learn who owns the policy and who feels the operating impact. That is more useful than a broad architecture pitch.
At a fictional research organization, the immediate question may be how visiting researchers access a protected application. Propose a discovery session around that journey, current approval process, and evidence of success. A broad roadmap can wait.
Do not equate an initiative with budget or urgency. Confirm the planning cycle and decision path. A clear first problem is a better foundation for stakeholder conversations and technical validation.
Ask a colleague to say, “We are doing zero trust.” The rep should reply, “Which access journey do you want to improve first?” Then use the answer to identify policy and operations owners.
In DealSpeak, review whether the seller turns a slogan into a specific workflow. Coach for a next step that tests one use case and identifies a measure of success the customer owns. Avoid promising a complete program.
