Run a Detection Tuning Workshop Around Analyst Decisions
Use representative alert decisions to guide a security engineering conversation.
Detection tuning should begin with analyst decisions. A solutions engineer should learn which alerts consume attention, what context is missing, and how the customer decides whether to investigate, suppress, or escalate.
Ask for a representative alert type that the customer can discuss safely. Map the signal, enrichment, reviewer, and outcome. This creates a shared view of the tuning question before anyone changes a rule.
At a fictional software company, analysts may repeatedly review service account alerts that lack application context. The engineer can propose a workshop with detection engineering and an application owner. The test should show whether added context changes a specific decision.
Do not claim that tuning eliminates false positives. Alert quality depends on the customer’s environment, data, and policy. Record the limits of the test and any missing data source.
Practice responding when a buyer says, “We have too many alerts.” The engineer should ask which alert decision wastes the most time and what evidence would improve it. They should not launch into configuration steps.
