Guide a student after an academic integrity notice

An academic integrity notice can cause a student to make a rushed enrollment decision. A retention advisor should focus on the response deadline, the published process, and available authorized support. The advisor should not advise an admission of fault or predict what a decision maker will do.

Evan says, "Will I be expelled? Should I admit fault before I withdraw?" Advisor Bri replies, "I cannot predict the outcome or tell you how to respond to an allegation. I can help you find the process and make sure you see the deadline. What date appears in the notice?" Evan says the response is due Friday and he has not opened the policy link. Bri says, "Let us open the policy together and identify the office that manages the case. The student advocate can explain support available through the process. You may also want to speak with the instructor about course questions through the appropriate channel."

Bri does not let the fear of an allegation become a reason to give legal or procedural advice outside her role. The student receives the official material and enough time to use the designated process.

Create a roleplay notice with a response deadline. Practice asking for the date before discussing options. A supervisor can review whether you stated your boundary clearly and gave the student a specific policy or support contact.
