Payments AEs: Explore Authorization Hold Questions Without Overpromising
Use a real transaction path to discuss authorization holds responsibly.
Authorization hold questions can be sensitive because a customer may see a pending charge while a merchant is still deciding whether to fulfill an order. A payments AE should treat the topic as an operating conversation. Ask what the customer sees, what event changes the order state, and which team answers the first question.
A fictional equipment rental business authorizes a card when a reservation begins and adjusts the final amount after equipment returns. The customer service manager says callers believe they were charged twice. The AE asks, “What language appears in the reservation confirmation, and what does the agent see when the caller contacts support?” The manager finds that the confirmation describes the rental but does not explain the pending amount. Finance adds that the adjustment enters its report later than the original authorization.
Do not promise that a hold will disappear by a certain day or explain issuer behavior as though it is under the merchant’s control. Avoid claiming that a configuration will eliminate customer confusion. Instead, separate the questions: customer communication, order events, reporting records, and any configuration that needs specialist review.
Coach with a buyer who asks, “Can you guarantee nobody will see a duplicate charge?” A strong AE says, “I cannot make that guarantee. We can trace one reservation and identify what customers and agents see at each step.” The next meeting should include an operations owner and a support owner. Ask them to bring a redacted timeline of one completed reservation. The goal is a verified map and an appropriate follow-up based on the evidence.
