Guiding a Benefits Committee Through a Vendor Disagreement
Give a committee a fair evaluation path when enthusiasm for a wellbeing vendor exceeds the completed review.
A committee chair may want a consultant to break a deadlock by naming the “best” wellbeing vendor. That shortcut skips the work that makes a decision defensible: defining the workforce need, success measure, budget boundary, and privacy review. The consultant can facilitate that sequence without endorsing a vendor.
Use this response: “I can help the committee agree on what it needs to evaluate before comparing options. We still need privacy review and a shared measure of success. Rather than recommend a winner today, let’s set criteria, assign the reviews, and compare approved information when those inputs are complete.”
If someone says the decision is urgent, ask what event creates the deadline and which risks increase if the committee moves without review. Map finance, privacy, procurement, and the benefits owner on one page. Keep vendor claims tied to approved comparison materials; do not repeat sales statements as evidence.
For a workshop, give each participant a different concern: employee engagement, budget, privacy, or implementation effort. The facilitator must turn those concerns into ranked criteria and assign each reviewer a due date. End by testing the decision rule with incomplete information. A useful committee plan explains what will be reviewed, who will decide, and what information must be present before selection.
