Negotiate a Machining Service Agreement Spanning Several Years While Reviewing Quality Risk
Help a procurement specialist discuss price pressure alongside supplier qualification and delivery evidence.
A lower alternative quote can narrow a sourcing conversation to unit price even when the incumbent has a stronger quality record. A procurement specialist can protect the decision process by surfacing qualification status, delivery requirements, and the authorized path for commercial terms.
Commodity manager Wade says, “Why should we pay more for the incumbent? Can you match the alternate supplier’s price?” Specialist Alina replies, “Before I discuss a term, I want to compare the operating assumptions. What does the supplier scorecard show for the incumbent, and where is the alternate in first article approval?” Wade says the incumbent performs well on quality, while the alternate has not completed approval. Alina says, “Let’s review the scorecard with supplier quality, operations, and finance. We can document the price difference, qualification status, and delivery criteria so the sourcing decision has an approved commercial basis.”
Alina has not rejected the price question. She has made it part of a complete evaluation. A negotiated rate, quality performance, supplier maturity, and continuity requirements may all affect the agreement. The procurement authorization process determines what can be offered or accepted.
In a negotiation rehearsal, give the rep an alternate quote and a partial scorecard. Ask them to identify the missing evidence before responding to a match request. Review the recap for a clear commercial owner, quality owner, and record of the assumptions the sourcing team will evaluate.
