Review a Supplier Capacity Claim Before Updating a Production Plan
Help a procurement specialist test capacity information before it informs purchasing commitments.
A supplier may say it has enough capacity for a launch, but the statement has little value until the buyer understands its assumptions. A procurement specialist should ask about the production window, yield, labor plan, and competing demand before the plant changes its own schedule or releases a commitment.
In a fictional review, buyer Tessa says, “Your note says you can support 8,000 housings each week. What operating pattern and yield does that figure assume?” Supplier representative Ben answers, “Two shifts and our normal scrap rate.” Tessa asks, “Does that include the other customer program starting in November, and what evidence can you provide from recent output?” Ben says the other program is still uncertain. Tessa replies, “Please send the capacity model and the current production data. I will review them with our planner and quality partner before we update any releases.”
Tessa gives the supplier a precise evidence request. She does not turn an early estimate into a supply assurance. The internal review can compare the supplier’s assumptions with demand, inventory, and qualification risk.
Practice this discussion using a supplier who repeats a capacity number. Ask which assumptions sit under the figure and request a record that supports it. Close by naming the planner and quality stakeholder who need to review the information before any commercial action.
