Qualify a Climate Data Readiness Conversation Through Ownership
A business development director can turn a broad climate data inquiry into a focused discovery session by mapping decisions, data owners, and approved specialists.
A climate data inquiry often arrives as a request for a fast roadmap. The business development director can make the first conversation useful by finding the decision behind the request. Ask which leaders need the information, what data they currently use, and which internal team can explain its quality. Advisory work can organize that discovery while the client’s authorized specialists address legal or reporting questions.
Start with the operating moment. A board committee may want visibility into supplier information, or finance may be trying to reconcile several emissions estimates. Those situations require different participants and a different first workshop. Name the information that is available, the information that is missing, and the owner who can validate each source. That gives the prospect a practical reason to bring the right people together.
In a fictional call, operations executive Mara says, “Our CEO wants a climate dashboard before the annual meeting. Can your team tell us what we need to report?” Director Owen replies, “We can help map the current data, the decisions leaders need to make, and the handoffs between procurement, finance, and sustainability. Your internal reporting owners and appropriate advisors can guide the requirements. Which decision will the dashboard support at the meeting?” Mara explains that the committee wants to decide whether to fund supplier data collection. Owen proposes a working session with procurement and finance.
For practice, take a vague sustainability request and write four questions that uncover its decision, audience, data source, and owner. Roleplay an executive who asks for an immediate answer. Finish by proposing a ninety minute discovery session with a clear attendee list and a shared output: a map of decisions and evidence gaps.
