Build a Discussion of Value Creation Around Management Evidence
An operating partner can begin a plan for value creation by separating an investment thesis from the portfolio company's operating facts.
A plan for the first 100 days needs management evidence as well as an investor thesis. The consulting partner should help an operating partner distinguish the ideas worth testing from results that have already been confirmed. This protects the portfolio company from a plan built on unverified baseline measures and gives the investment committee a clearer view of the decisions ahead.
Ask what the investment committee expects by day 100, which operating measures management trusts, and where the baseline is incomplete. Identify the chief executive, finance lead, and operating leaders who can validate assumptions. Then define a short diligence session where management can test priorities, dependencies, and implementation capacity. The session should produce a ranked set of questions before it produces a promise of upside.
The operating partner says, “We need a plan before management is ready. Can you tell us the upside now?” The consulting partner replies, “We can frame the opportunities, and the operating data needs to validate them. Which KPIs are reliable today, and where does management see the largest constraint?” He says sales pipeline data is inconsistent. The partner responds, “Let’s bring the CEO and finance lead into a focused review. We can identify the measures that support an initial thesis and define the work needed to confirm the rest for the committee.”
Send the group an agenda for decisions with data owners and questions to test. Describe potential benefits as hypotheses until the client validates them. Practice by asking for the evidence behind each priority and naming the management leader who can confirm it.
