Build a shared skills taxonomy with operations leaders
Turn inconsistent job labels into practical skill definitions for workforce planning.
Teams can use the same title for people who perform very different work. A talent solutions consultant can help operations and HR define skills in terms of tasks, tools, and demonstrated capability. That shared language supports hiring, development, and succession conversations.
Choose one role family rather than trying to classify an entire organization at once. Ask supervisors what work separates an independent performer from someone still learning. Ask what equipment, systems, or safety procedures apply. Capture the words employees use, then test the draft with people who do the job. Avoid assuming a title proves a skill.
Consultant Clara asked a field supervisor, “When you say senior technician, what can that person do that a new technician cannot?” He replied, “They diagnose the controller fault and complete the service report without a call to the office.” Clara said, “Let us list those as separate skills. Who can verify each one today?” The supervisor named the lead technician and training coordinator. Together they found that the training records tracked courses but not controller diagnosis.
The group identified that training records did not capture controller diagnosis.
For practice, select one title from a client organization. Interview two people who work with that role and list five tasks they both name. Mark which tasks need a supervisor's verification. Roleplay explaining the draft to an employee who says, “My title does not show what I do.” Update the taxonomy with their concrete example, then send the short list back for review by the operational owner.
