Lead a Data Residency Conversation Without Overclaiming
Prepare sellers to handle location and data-handling questions with precision.
The buyer moment
A global prospect asks where data is processed and whether specific residency requirements can be met.
Data residency questions become risky when a seller answers from memory. A privacy counsel may care about a particular subsidiary, customer data type, or processor relationship. Ask which jurisdiction and data flow the review covers. Capture the buyer’s wording, including the jurisdiction and the use case, before seeking an approved answer. If the customer needs a commitment by a board date, record that deadline as well. The right follow-up may be documentation, a privacy specialist, or a legal review; the account executive should not choose among them alone.
A useful way to open
“I want to give you an accurate answer. Which data class and jurisdiction are driving the requirement?”
Move the decision forward
Never improvise on privacy, legal, or infrastructure commitments. The seller’s job is to clarify the requirement, capture it accurately, and bring the approved expert or documentation into the process.
Coach language that is useful but bounded: explain the review path, avoid guarantees, and identify the buyer’s deadline.
Practice before the next call
Roleplay a counsel who asks for an immediate direct answer. Practice acknowledging urgency while refusing to guess.
Next step
Document the requirement verbatim, identify the approved responder, and agree on the next review time.
Practice these next
Give a technical champion language for explaining the business consequence of the status quo.
Protect the commercial conversation when procurement asks for a number too early.
Learn from a closed lost-deal review without turning the conversation into a rebuttal.
Understand whether consolidation is about cost, risk, support burden, or executive control.
Preserve context and rebuild access when the person carrying the deal departs.
Design a reference conversation around the buyer’s real uncertainty and questions.
