Respond to a Concentration Concern by Organizing a Review
Relationship managers can address a household’s concern about a concentrated holding without offering personalized investment advice.
A client may call after a familiar company’s shares rise or fall and say they are worried about having too much in one place. The relationship manager should take the concern seriously without telling the client to buy, sell, hold, or wait. The useful service is to clarify the concern, capture relevant context, and connect the client to an appropriate review.
Ask what prompted the call and what outcome the client hopes a review will provide. Clarify whether there is an upcoming event, a cash need, or a family decision that makes the concern feel urgent. Explain that the advisory team can review the client’s situation through the proper process; do not make market predictions or comment on what a security will do.
Noah says, “My employer stock is down again. Should I get out?” The manager replies, “I hear that the recent movement is unsettling. I cannot make that decision on this call, but I can help arrange a timely review. Is there a deadline, planned sale, or other need we should make the advisor aware of?” Noah says he has no deadline but wants to understand his exposure. The manager says, “I will document that concern and coordinate the right conversation.”
Practice with a client seeking a direct answer. Review whether the manager shows empathy, gathers only relevant context, and states the boundary plainly. A strong practice close includes the client’s stated concern, the meeting owner, and the information the client may want to bring, without a hint of a trading instruction.
