Lead a Household Review When Priorities Have Drifted
Coach relationship managers to reconnect a household around changed goals and clear next steps.
Household priorities can drift while service routines remain unchanged. A relationship manager notices this when one partner disengages, meetings become transactional, or life events appear in passing. The response is not to defend the existing plan. It is to reopen discovery and let the household decide what needs attention.
Begin with a neutral observation: “At our last few conversations, I have heard changes around work and family. I want to make sure our relationship reflects what matters now. What would you like us to understand better?” Ask each participating person the question. Do not assume the more vocal partner represents the whole household.
At a review, Claire says she is frustrated because every meeting focuses on performance, while her husband, Ben, wants to discuss caring for his father. The relationship manager replies, “Thank you for saying that. It sounds like our agenda has not matched your current priorities. Would it help to separate today’s service questions from a planning conversation about caregiving, time, and household responsibilities?” Claire agrees. Ben adds that his sister may also be involved. The manager records the concern and identifies an appropriate next meeting. She does not recommend investments or promise a financial outcome.
Close with a written agenda in the clients’ language, owners for any follow-up, and permission boundaries for other family members. Coach relationship managers to treat a complaint as data rather than resistance. A household review succeeds when clients see that the firm listened, did not overreach, and created a specific path to discuss the priorities they actually have.
