Receive a Power of Attorney Request at the Branch
Give a customer a careful intake path without interpreting legal authority.
A customer presenting a power of attorney may believe that showing a document immediately creates account access. A branch banker should recognize the urgency while explaining that the bank independently reviews authority. Begin by offering sympathy if the request follows illness or travel, then ask which task related to the account the visitor is trying to complete. Do not disclose balances, transactions, or account details before verified authority is established.
Kara brings a document for her father, who is recovering from surgery, and asks to move money for his bills. Her banker says, “I can explain how the bank receives and reviews this request.” The banker does not say the document is valid, interpret its wording, or state that Kara can act today. Those conclusions require the bank’s designated review process and may also involve Kara’s own legal advisor.
Use current guidance to identify where documents and identification should be submitted. Explain what the visitor can expect after submission, including the contact route for factual updates. If the document is incomplete or a question is outside branch authority, avoid filling the gap with a guess. A clear handoff is more respectful than a hurried answer that later proves wrong.
Before Kara leaves, recap the requested action, the review owner, and the next communication point. Ask her to describe what she will do next so the branch can correct a misunderstanding early. This coaching protects her father’s privacy and gives Kara a practical path through an emotionally difficult task. The banker adds value by making the process understandable, while authority and account action remain subject to verified review.
