Handle a Caregiver Account Request With Care
Keep empathy and privacy together when a caregiver needs bank help.
A caregiver at a branch may be balancing hospital visits, bills, and fear. They may also ask for account details they are not authorized to receive. A branch banker should explain privacy as a form of protection. Start with, “I’m sorry your family is dealing with this.” Then explain that account information and access require verified authority.
Do not discuss balances, transactions, or access until that authority is confirmed. A family relationship or mention of a power of attorney document may matter for the next step, but the banker should not interpret legal documents at the desk. Explain what the bank’s review process needs and how materials can be submitted through the appropriate channel.
David says his mother is hospitalized and asks, “I’m her son. Can you tell me whether her bill was paid?” The banker replies, “I understand why this feels urgent. I can explain how the bank reviews authority and connect you with the right team.” David receives direction without disclosure. The banker has recognized the situation without making a decision about access.
Give the caregiver a written reference for the support channel if policy permits. They may need to return with documents later, so name the next action and the expected contact point. A calm explanation of review protects the account holder while recognizing the caregiver’s immediate need for direction. In coaching, flag legal interpretations and casual disclosures. The customer should leave with a plan they can act on before leaving the branch.
