Separate Software Configuration From Research Interpretation
Handle an unexpected analysis output by confirming technical facts while leaving biological conclusions with the research team.
An unusual output in a research analysis workflow invites two different questions: whether the software is configured as intended and what the output means scientifically. The field application scientist can address the first question through approved guidance. The second belongs with the researchers who own the hypothesis, data, and interpretation.
Confirm the software version, workflow settings, input details, reference files, and error messages before discussing possibilities. A custom reference file deserves particular attention because support may not have reviewed it. Explain the technical scope plainly: the team can help compare configuration facts with approved documentation, while the customer’s research owner decides how to interpret biological significance.
In a fictional meeting, a computational biologist asks, “Does this output prove our biological hypothesis?” The application scientist says, “I cannot draw that research conclusion. I can help verify the version, configuration, and how the custom reference was applied. Once those facts are clear, your bioinformatics lead can assess the result in the context of the study.” The scientist then finds that the reference file was updated between two analyses.
Run a practice review where the customer uses an approved reference in one scenario and a custom reference in another. Have the trainee state which questions they can investigate and which they must route. A manager should listen for a clean boundary that still leaves the researcher with a helpful next technical action.
