Support a laboratory’s investigation without assigning a source or root cause from incomplete records.
A contamination concern creates pressure for an immediate explanation. The field application scientist should resist identifying a source when run notes and conditions are incomplete. A useful early conversation captures what is known, preserves uncertainty, and helps the laboratory enter its documented investigation process with better information.
Ask what the team observed, when it was detected, which run and materials were involved, what changes occurred, and what records remain. Determine whether shift notes, lot identifiers, environmental observations, or preparation details are available. Do not frame missing records as blame. They are simply facts the laboratory may need to review with its quality lead and research team.
In a fictional urgent call, a lab lead asks, “Can you tell us where the contamination came from?” The scientist answers, “I cannot determine a source from this information. Let’s capture the run conditions and identify which notes can still be recovered, then involve your quality lead in the laboratory’s investigation process.” The lead realizes that the shift handoff log was not saved but that the technician can provide a preparation record with a time stamp.
Use a practice case with deliberately incomplete details. Have the trainee separate observations from assumptions, request records respectfully, and name the next customer owner. Review whether their closing message creates a clear investigation handoff rather than a premature technical conclusion.
