Reset an Executive Account Steering Group With Owned Decisions
Turn overdue actions into a focused governance agenda without assigning the customer’s internal owners.
An executive steering group loses value when actions remain open and no one owns a decision. A strategic account manager can help reset the meeting around specific choices, evidence, and accountable attendees. They should not assign the customer’s internal owners. Customer leadership must decide who has the authority to act.
Review the prior notes before requesting the reset. List each overdue action, the decision it was meant to support, the missing information, and the customer role likely needed. Separate support issues, commercial requests, and research workflow questions so the meeting does not become a general status call. Send an agenda that asks participants to confirm ownership before the session.
In a fictional planning call, the research operations officer says, “Can you assign our internal owners for us?” The manager answers, “I can show where the action trail is incomplete and propose the roles that need to be represented. Your leadership should confirm the owners. Could we review the three overdue actions and decide who needs to attend for each decision?” The officer assigns procurement to one action and asks the core facility director to name the owner for the remaining workflow issue.
For coaching, take old meeting notes and rewrite them as a decision agenda with a line confirming the owner beside each item. A manager should look for a clear distinction between identifying a needed role and appointing a customer employee. That distinction turns governance work into a credible support function.
