Resetting Governance in a Stalled Health System Account
Create an account meeting focused on decisions when service and commercial ownership have become unclear.
Stalled account meetings usually signal unclear decision rights. A strategic account manager can restore useful governance by identifying which decisions belong to the health system and by separating operational questions from commercial ones.
Review the open actions before proposing another meeting. Ask which decision is blocked, who has authority inside the health system, what evidence each owner needs, and whether the issue is service, education, contracting, or something else. Do not tell the customer who should have final authority. Instead, make the missing authority visible and invite the appropriate customer leaders to resolve it.
An operations vice president might say, “Clinical and procurement keep sending us in circles. Who should decide?” Respond: “Your system determines approval authority. I can help make the choices and dependencies clear. Let’s list the service decision separately from any commercial question, then ask each function to name its authorized owner. I will propose an agenda focused on those two decisions and the evidence each owner needs.”
The reset works because it stops status reporting from hiding unresolved choices. A short agenda with one decision per section gives senior leaders a reason to attend and makes follow-up measurable.
For a practice exercise, take an unfocused account agenda and rewrite every topic as a decision, owner, evidence source, or dated action. Remove any item that is merely an update with no required audience.
