Scope a Network Segmentation Review Around One Path
Use a traffic path the customer approves to clarify security evaluation criteria.
Network segmentation reviews can expand into a map of every environment, application, and policy. A solutions engineer should make the first conversation smaller. Ask which traffic path creates the customer’s immediate concern and which team can explain how that path normally behaves.
Learn who owns the network policy, application dependency, and change window. These responsibilities often sit with different teams. A useful evaluation names them before requesting access or proposing a demonstration.
At a fictional online marketplace, the security team wants to review communication between a checkout service and an internal inventory system. The engineer can ask whether a nonproduction path represents the decision, then define the observations the customer needs. The network and application owners choose the safe environment.
Do not state that a segmentation control will stop every unwanted connection. The customer’s architecture, policy, and operational changes determine what can be tested. Record unavailable traffic data as a limitation.
In a drill, a buyer says, “Show us microsegmentation.” The engineer should ask which connection they want to understand first and what would count as useful evidence. They should not begin with an unbounded architecture diagram.
