Discuss prerequisites with a prospective student

Prerequisite questions sound simple until an applicant brings work experience, older coursework, or a credential from another institution. Enrollment advisors can organize the evidence and direct the applicant to the academic review that determines eligibility.

Nico tells advisor Asha, "I have worked in a lab for four years. Can I skip the chemistry prerequisite for the imaging program?" Asha says, "Your lab experience may be important context. Which course are you seeking entry to, and do you have transcripts or credential records that the program can review?" Nico says he completed biology years ago and has a workplace certificate. Asha replies, "The academic department applies its prerequisite policy. I cannot approve a waiver during this call. I can show you the course description, identify the materials the reviewer accepts, and connect you with the program advisor." Nico asks whether he should register for chemistry now. Asha says, "The program advisor can explain the available options after reviewing your record. Let us make sure they receive the correct documents before you choose a schedule."

Asha captures the course name, start term, and records Nico can provide. Her note prepares the academic advisor to make a decision with the right information. It also helps Nico avoid paying for or rearranging classes based on a casual answer.

Use a blank course description in a roleplay. Ask the applicant to name the target program, prior learning, and desired term. Finish by naming the academic reviewer and the materials they need. Review whether your response kept the enrollment conversation useful without taking over an academic decision.
