Use Renewal Risk as a Listening Opportunity
Address account uncertainty with specific evidence and ownership.
Renewal risk is often signaled by changing stakeholders, unanswered questions, low engagement, or an unresolved service issue rather than one explicit objection.
Before a renewal discussion, compare the customer’s unresolved items with commitments made in prior reviews. Ask which item matters most now and what a satisfactory update looks like. A customer may need a clear owner more than a new presentation. The manager should write down that recovery need, confirm it aloud, and avoid using commercial urgency to rush past the service work.
A fictional customer’s renewal is approaching while an unresolved reporting question has no clear owner. The manager should begin with that issue, ask what a satisfactory resolution looks like, and name the responsible internal team. Do not use the renewal date to press for an expansion discussion. Coaching should reward a written recovery plan with updates confirmed by the customer. Once service work is progressing, the account manager can ask what the customer wants from a separate future planning review.
Ask what the customer needs from the upcoming review, who will participate, and which prior commitments remain open. A fictional finance leader may be satisfied with the platform but frustrated that a reporting request has not received an owner.
Do not use expansion pressure to bypass a service concern or assume a renewal decision. Practice a conversation where procurement asks for a reduction. Coach the manager to learn the blocker before responding commercially.
Create a recovery plan with actions confirmed by the customer, named owners, and a date to review progress.
