Payments AEs: Clarifying Ownership of Payment Link Workflows
A discovery conversation for payments AEs about payment links, customer support, and operational ownership.
Payment links often cross sales, support, and finance responsibilities. A payments AE can make a discovery call useful by learning who creates a link, who answers a payer’s question, and who recognizes that payment has been completed. A feature demonstration comes later; first establish the customer’s actual operating path.
Imagine a membership organization that sends payment links after a phone enrollment. The AE asks, “When a member says they did not receive the link, what does the representative do first?” The enrollment lead explains that staff check the contact record, resend from a separate tool, and ask finance whether payment arrived another way. The AE follows with, “Who decides when that enrollment is ready to activate?” This maps a concrete decision without assuming that a missed message represents a payment failure.
Ask about the exceptions that create follow-up. Can a representative correct a contact detail? Is a link tied to a particular invoice or customer record? What information should support have before escalating? Record the answers in a simple sequence and let the customer correct it. If different teams own the sender and the completion check, invite both to the next session.
Coach the AE to avoid promising faster payment or fewer abandoned enrollments. During a roleplay, the prospect says, “We send links manually.” The seller should ask what happens after sending and avoid making a savings claim. Score whether the AE identifies a trigger, an owner, a visible record, and an unresolved question. The recap should reflect the buyer’s workflow and identify the question for a focused evaluation.
