Turn an Automation Idea Into a Pilot Decision
Guide an automation exploration with part mix, work flow, and safety inputs before any payback claim.
An automation idea becomes credible when a plant can describe the work it wants to study. A seller can help a manufacturing director replace a broad request for return on investment with facts about the cell, parts, people, and review needed for a pilot.
In a fictional meeting, director Carlos says, “The board wants one slide with the payback. Can your system run every part we make?” Rep Imani replies, “The answer depends on the parts and how the cell runs today. Which resin grades pass through this cell, and what changed after the operator team revised packing?” Carlos says three grades have different handling needs and the new packing process is still settling in. Imani continues, “Let’s have the cell supervisor bring part mix and cycle records. The EHS manager can identify the safety review, and your automation engineer can describe the interfaces. We can then decide whether a limited pilot is worth designing.”
That response gives the board a responsible path. It does not convert a preliminary idea into a universal capability statement or assign a fixed economic outcome to a cell that has not been studied.
For roleplay, ask one person to demand a quick payback figure. The rep should draw four columns titled parts, current work, safety, and decision. Score whether every question collects a fact for one column. End the practice with a pilot decision question: what evidence would make the director comfortable approving the next technical step?
