Map Waiting Time on an Assembly Line Before Proposing an Evaluation
Guide an industrial account executive through a discussion of waiting time that earns a useful evaluation meeting.
Long waits between assembly stations can be expensive, yet a seller should learn where time accumulates before connecting the problem to an equipment or process evaluation. The first conversation needs a map of the current flow, the people who own each handoff, and a measure the plant already trusts.
In a fictional meeting, operations director Elena says, “We keep adding people at final assembly, but orders still miss the shipping cut off.” Account executive Marcus asks, “Where does a unit wait longest from kit release through final test?” Elena says it often waits for torque verification. Marcus follows with, “Who records the queue time, and does the delay occur on every shift or only after a certain model enters the line?” Elena identifies the production supervisor and quality lead. Marcus says, “Could we meet with them next Tuesday to trace three recent orders and agree on the baseline for an evaluation?”
Marcus has turned a broad complaint into a decision path. He has not assumed that labor is the cause or presented a throughput claim. The plant can decide whether an evaluation deserves time after it sees the pattern in its own records.
Practice by asking a colleague to play Elena and offer only a vague delay complaint. Ask one question about the flow, one about the measurement, and one about the decision owner. Review the recording for moments where the rep supplied an answer before earning the relevant fact.
