Revisit Cutting Tool Consignment Levels Without Promising Coverage
Help a tool crib manager separate active demand from legacy service obligations before changing min-max levels.
Obsolete inserts in a tool crib make a broad inventory reduction attractive. A distributor representative can help the customer avoid a blunt change by separating active production demand from open service obligations and by checking whether usage data identifies the item accurately.
Tool crib manager Ken says, “We cannot carry every old insert forever. Can you guarantee a new min-max will cover us?” Representative Leila asks, “Which legacy programs still have open service orders, and do your usage reports distinguish the two insert grades?” Ken explains that three programs remain open and the reports combine grades under one description. Leila says, “Let’s compare open orders, consumption history, and the consignment list with production planning and purchasing. We can then identify active demand, legacy coverage, and the lead-time evidence needed for a stocking decision.”
Leila does not turn a desired inventory target into an availability assurance. The review creates a transparent decision path: isolate the active items, identify service commitments, correct unclear item records, and ask the authorized customer team to approve the stocking level.
For coaching, give a rep twelve months of mixed usage and two open service orders. Ask them to explain which data needs cleanup before recommending a change. A manager should hear a request for demand evidence, a lead-time source, and the customer owner who approves the final inventory setting.
