Reset an Account Plan for a Health System After Unfocused Meetings
Earn a new planning conversation by listening for system priorities and coordinating one clear purpose.
When an executive in a health system says earlier meetings had no clear purpose, a key account manager should learn what the executive needs from a coordinated relationship and whether a focused meeting process could support the system’s decisions. A reset begins with the system’s priorities and uses company capabilities when they serve that purpose.
Ask which departments have been receiving separate outreach, what topics create overlap, and what the executive would want reviewed quarterly. Capture names and functions, but do not imply that each stakeholder will receive a solution or commitment. The manager’s first responsibility is to organize the account picture so future conversations have a relevant owner and agenda.
In a fictional conversation, the executive says, “Why should we meet again?” The manager answers, “You are right to expect a purpose. Before suggesting another meeting, I would like to understand where our teams have created noise and what system priority deserves one coordinated discussion. Which leaders should have a voice in that plan?” The executive identifies pharmacy, operations, and a director for a service line. The manager can propose a concise planning session around those priorities.
Coach the moment by asking a colleague to play an impatient executive. Score whether the manager listens without pitching, maps stakeholders, and earns permission for a specific next step. In a debrief, review the meeting invitation. It should state the system topic, attendees, and desired decision or discovery outcome. That is more credible than a generic account update and gives each participant a reason to prepare.
