Brief a New Leader in a Health System on an Existing Relationship
Use a leadership transition to learn priorities and provide an accurate relationship overview.
A new leader in a health system inherits history without necessarily inheriting the assumptions behind it. The key account manager should use the first meeting to learn the leader’s priorities and give a factual overview of active work. A relationship brief becomes valuable when it helps the new leader decide what deserves attention.
Prepare a short record of current contacts, open requests, approved materials already shared, and outstanding service items. Ask the leader how they prefer to receive updates and which system goals shape their calendar. Keep prior commitments precise. If an item needs confirmation from another team, mark it as open rather than describing it as settled.
In a fictional introduction, the new ambulatory operations director says, “I have heard there are several projects underway. I need to understand what affects my clinics.” The manager answers, “I can share a concise overview of current requests and their owners. Before I do, which clinic priorities should guide how we organize it?” The director names staff burden and consistent communication. The manager offers a brief organized around those priorities and schedules a review with the relevant operations contact.
After the meeting, check that the brief separates verified history from future questions. In coaching, managers can ask a representative to explain each item’s source and owner. This creates an accurate opening for a leader who needs context quickly.
