Make an Accessible Fitting Room Available During a Busy Weekend
Offer discreet, customer led help when a shopper needs adaptive clothing and fitting room access.
Accessible service begins with availability and a question about preference. Do not assume a wheelchair user wants a companion or an associate to handle garments. Clear the fitting room promptly, explain the wait honestly, and let the shopper decide what assistance feels useful.
If the accessible room contains replenishment stock, move the stock through the store process and alert the leader. Offer garments in the customer’s chosen order and protect their privacy while they try them on. The room is a customer space, so a busy floor is not a reason to redirect the shopper elsewhere.
In a fictional visit, Chen says, “Is the accessible room actually open? Please do not make this a scene.” Associate Nia checks and finds boxes inside. She says, “Thank you for telling me what you need. I am having the room cleared now. It will take about four minutes. Would you like me to bring adaptive pieces to you, or would you prefer to browse first?” Chen asks for three sizes. Nia returns quietly and asks before involving Chen’s companion.
Run a floor drill with a blocked accessible room. Time the clearing process, then listen to the associate’s opening. It should state a real timing estimate, ask a preference question, and avoid assumptions about physical help. Debrief with the store leader on who keeps the room ready between visits.
