Coach Jewelry Teams on Financing Timing
Use customer feedback to move financing discussion after thoughtful discovery.
When shoppers report that financing appears too early, the manager needs a behavior to examine. Pull the documented feedback and review opening language with the store leader. Do not label associates as pushy or assume intent. The coaching focus is the sequence: learn the occasion and preferences, show relevant choices, then ask whether payment information would help.
Leader Ron said, “Financing helps us close sales. Are you saying my team is pushy?” District manager Inez replied, “Financing may be useful when a shopper wants to discuss it. The feedback shows it was introduced before associates asked about the gift or budget. Let’s listen to the mystery shop examples together.” Ron heard an opener that mentioned payment in the first sentence. Inez said, “For this week, coach one opening: occasion, style, and timing first. Then observe five conversations and note when the customer invites a payment discussion.”
Coaching becomes fair when it relies on a sample the leader can review. The manager should tell associates why the sequence helps the shopper make sense of the visit. Keep approved financing language available for the moment it becomes relevant.
Ask a store leader to roleplay the opening twice, once with early financing and once after discovery. Have them identify the customer cue that permits the topic. Review the observation notes at week’s end for actual wording and the next behavior to reinforce.
The district manager can sample a mix of gift, self purchase, and repair conversations. A wider sample prevents the team from treating one shopper type as the rule for every financing discussion.
