Lead a Boutique Jewelry Assortment Reset
Review slow sell through, backorders, and buying limits before proposing a spring assortment.
An assortment review should begin with the buyer’s evidence. Slow statement pieces may reflect placement, price, customer mix, or a buying limit. Ask to see sell through by category and learn what has changed in the store. Keep allocation and replenishment promises outside the conversation until the responsible team has reviewed them.
Buyer Ana said, “Why would I add anything when this category is slow?” Account manager Miles replied, “Let’s look at the pieces that moved, the pieces that stalled, and the amount you have available for spring. Which stories are your customers responding to?” Ana described smaller gifts selling well after a rent increase reduced open to buy. Miles said, “That points toward a tighter assortment. Two popular items are currently backordered, so I will confirm their status with planning. We can build a proposal around proven price points and review it before market orders close.”
The manager should separate a recommendation from a commercial commitment. Note the demand evidence, the buyer’s limit, the backorder question, and the date for a decision. A buyer can then judge the plan without feeling pushed to solve an inventory problem created elsewhere.
Use a simple account review with ten SKUs and a concealed backorder. Have the learner ask for the buyer’s priority before showing any new product. A manager should review whether the final recap names data, assumptions, and the owner of the allocation check.
Ask the learner to remove one weak category from the proposal and explain why. The explanation should connect to the buyer’s sell through and available spend. It should use the buyer’s current data.
