Learn From a Manager Champion Without Copying Their Team
Use a strong manager’s coaching routine as evidence for an adoption conversation across other teams.
A manager champion can reveal what makes a program usable. Their success is a starting point for inquiry, because their territory, team size, and leadership support may differ from other groups. A customer success manager should capture the routine in enough detail that peers can decide what is transferable.
In a fictional interview, CSM Kira asks manager Owen, “What happens between choosing a recording and giving feedback?” Owen says, “Each Monday, sellers bring one deal they want help with. We listen for one moment and schedule a retry.” Kira asks, “What would make that hard for another manager?” Owen replies, “Some managers run forecast at the same time.” In the regional review, Kira says, “Owen’s team uses a short Monday ritual. Could each manager set aside ten minutes in an existing meeting to try these steps?” A director responds, “We should require his exact playbook.” Kira says, “Let’s test the core steps in two teams and learn what their schedules support.”
The champion’s experience becomes a source of practical detail that managers can adapt to their calendar.
Practice interviewing a champion. Ask for the trigger, the sequence, the seller response, and the manager’s follow-up. Then write a pilot invitation that names the core behavior to test. Review it for assumptions that every team has the same capacity.
