Renewal Manager: Champion Transition
Build a credible renewal decision when the original program champion has left.
When an enablement champion leaves, the renewal manager’s first job is to make the account understandable for the interim owner. A renewal discussion built on scattered memories makes a rushed decision more likely. Start with records that can be checked: adoption reports, support history, prior objectives, contract dates, and the names of managers who used the program.
Marin met with Elena, an interim enablement leader who had inherited a renewal due in thirty days. Elena said, “I am also running sales kickoff. I cannot reconstruct a year of work.” Marin replied, “You should not have to. The records show 86 active managers last quarter, three open support requests, and a goal to improve coaching consistency. Which managers can tell us whether that goal still matters?” Elena named Priya in the East and David in commercial sales. Marin then asked whether procurement needed a utilization packet before the decision meeting. Elena confirmed a deadline the following Friday.
The transition packet should distinguish verified facts from questions for the new owner. Include original goals, activity trends, completed milestones, unresolved risks, and a stakeholder map. Avoid presenting an old champion’s opinion as a current executive decision. If adoption notes sit in a personal workspace, say that the evidence is unavailable and seek corroboration through account records and interviews.
Before the renewal review, rehearse a briefing that lasts five minutes with a colleague playing the interim leader. Open with the decision date, summarize the evidence, and ask the leader to choose which two stakeholders will validate current need. Review the recording for unsupported claims and for a clear owner beside every open question. Send the packet before those interviews so each participant can correct the account history.
