Run an edge device lifecycle review
Connect device age and support records to a network design discussion without assumptions.
An older edge device can influence a network refresh, yet age alone does not describe its operating condition. A Solutions Engineer should ask for model, software, support status, location, and the workflows connected through it. That evidence helps the customer decide which devices need deeper review.
Invite both the network owner and the team that maintains asset records. Ask whether the inventory was recently reconciled, whether spare units exist, and which locations would be difficult to reach. Learn how change windows are approved. This prevents a lifecycle discussion from becoming an unsupported replacement schedule.
“These routers are old, so we should replace all of them,” says the operations manager. Sofia responds, “Which models are present, and which records show their current software and support status?” He has a spreadsheet with several blank entries. Sofia says, “Let’s use that sheet to identify the sites where a record check matters first. Who can confirm the remote locations and their maintenance windows?” The manager names the regional technicians. Sofia schedules a review with them.
Take an inventory extract and mark fields that are factual versus fields inferred from age. Write three questions that would make each inference usable. In the workshop, ask the customer to choose a small set of sites for record validation. Review the result with the asset owner, then let the customer decide whether it supports a wider design or requires more field evidence.
