Map plant traffic before proposing quality of service rules
Help industrial network teams classify traffic and security constraints before designing quality of service policies.
Quality of service settings depend on measured traffic and the paths traffic actually takes. In a plant, voice, video, telemetry, and vendor access may each have different timing and security needs. The solutions engineer can create a better design discussion by asking the industrial team to classify flows before anyone assigns priority.
Jon, an industrial network engineer, says, “Can you prioritize everything critical? We need quality of service to stop every delay.” Imani replies, “We can start by identifying what each application sends, when the bursts occur, and where it enters the network. Which telemetry flow changes during a shift, and does any vendor connection bypass the usual firewall path?” Jon says telemetry spikes at shift changes and a vendor VPN uses a separate path. Imani says, “Let’s capture traffic during that period and bring OT security into the review. The design can then distinguish voice, control traffic, video, and the vendor connection using facts from the plant.”
The capture plan should name locations, time windows, applications, packet behavior, and the people permitted to collect the data. Ask the plant operations lead to explain what an interruption would affect. Ask OT security to review any route that does not follow the usual controls.
For practice, choose a customer who says every application is urgent. Ask them to rank one workflow by operational consequence and another by traffic pattern. Compare those answers with a colleague before you describe any policy option.
