Reconcile an ESG Report Question With a Client's Own Definitions
Help portfolio specialists address ESG reporting concerns when a client uses a different internal taxonomy.
An ESG report can create confusion even when every number is correctly produced. The client may use a taxonomy, coverage rule, or exclusion definition that differs from the methodology behind the portfolio report. A portfolio specialist creates trust by making those definitions visible instead of claiming that one report certifies the other.
Ask which field concerns the client, the period covered, and what their internal definition requires. Bring the approved methodology document to the conversation. If a mapping between definitions requires data or compliance input, identify that work as a follow-up rather than improvising a conclusion.
A sustainability lead says, “Your report says the portfolio meets our standard, but our screen excludes more issuers.” The specialist replies, “Our report describes the methodology and definitions used for this portfolio; it does not certify your organization’s standard. If you share the specific screen and reporting date, we can compare the definitions with our data team and explain where they align or differ.” The lead agrees to provide the taxonomy.
Document the client’s terms exactly and keep the resulting analysis attached to the report version. This prevents a later reader from applying an old mapping to a new methodology.
For practice, ask a rep to handle a client who wants a quick certification statement. The rep should explain the distinction without sounding evasive, collect the needed definition, and name an accountable reviewer. A manager should look for careful language and a next action grounded in evidence.
