Prepare a Client for a Productive Conversation With the Investment Team
Help portfolio specialists route institutional questions to investment teams with context.
A meeting with the investment team is strongest when the client’s questions are known in advance. Specialists should clarify the client’s audience, decision, documents reviewed, and questions that require investment expertise so the right people can prepare verified answers.
Ask, “What will your committee be deciding after this conversation?” Then ask which questions are factual, which require interpretation of existing materials, and which may need additional research. A client may want to understand portfolio construction, a stated process, or an item in a report. Summarize the questions without adding assumptions about their concern.
For example, a client asks to meet the team after reading a commentary. The specialist replies, “To make their time useful, can we identify the two or three points your committee needs clarified?” The client names concentration and sell discipline. The specialist shares those topics with the investment team, provides the relevant approved documents, and tells the client who will address each question.
Coach specialists to set boundaries clearly. They can coordinate information and explain the review process; they should not promise a particular portfolio action or outcome. After the meeting, distribute a factual recap with sources, open items, and ownership. This preparation respects the client’s governance process and allows investment professionals to answer the questions that actually matter.
