Route a Local Method Change Through the Laboratory’s Review Path
Help a postdoctoral fellow raise an inconsistency question without approving a modified method for the next run.
Inconsistent research results may lead a postdoctoral fellow to draft a change to a locally validated method. A customer success scientist can help clarify the question and guide a proper handoff, but cannot approve the local modification. The laboratory’s controlled review process determines whether and how its documented workflow changes.
Ask what inconsistency prompted the proposed change, which step the fellow wants to alter, whether any run details are available, and who owns local method review. Keep the discussion separate from scientific interpretation. The immediate goal is to make sure the laboratory has a clear, documented question for its principal investigator or quality liaison before the next run proceeds.
In a fictional call, the fellow asks, “Can you approve the modified method for our next run?” The scientist replies, “I cannot approve a change to your locally validated method. I can help you frame the question and point you to the relevant approved resources. Who reviews method changes in your laboratory, and what evidence will they need from the prior runs?” The fellow says the principal investigator and quality liaison must review the draft and asks for the current product instructions to include in the discussion.
Practice by turning an informal change request into a short review brief: observed issue, proposed change, existing records, and local owner. During coaching, listen for whether the trainee avoids endorsing the modification while still giving the customer a practical way to advance the question.
