Assess a Package Proposal Without Counting Included Services Twice
Help revenue managers test package economics by separating room revenue, included services, and incremental costs.
A package can appear more profitable than it is when the review treats an included service as both package value and separate revenue. Build the calculation from the guest charge, then list included items once. Separate package receipts, discount redemption, actual service costs, and dining spend beyond credit.
Agree the question before debating the answer. The team may be deciding whether the package improves occupancy on soft dates, protects rate, or supports a partner relationship. Each purpose needs a different comparison. A spa credit carries a different commercial effect from a breakfast already included in the room rate.
In a fictional planning session, marketing lead Sofia proposed a $260 package for one night over a weekend, including a room, breakfast, and a $40 dining credit. Revenue manager Malik said, “Our public rate for one night in a room without the package is $235, so the package collects $25 more per package. Breakfast has a $14 food cost per occupied room. A redeemed $40 credit reduces dining revenue when used. It does not automatically create a $40 operating cost. We should not add the credit to package revenue.” Sofia asked, “How should we compare it?” Malik replied, “Use $260 as package receipts. If guests redeem the full credit for 30 of 50 packages, discounts total $1,200, or $24 per package on average. Finance must allocate breakfast costs, actual food and service costs for redeemed meals, and any dining spend above $40 before we call the result profitable. We can then compare those figures with room-only bookings on the same dates.”
The math becomes easier to review when each included service has one line and an owner. Confirm how redemption, meal costs, and spend above the credit will be reported before launch.
Practice with a proposed package and a rate for a room without the package. Have a manager calculate the guest payment, list included services once, and explain the data to collect after two weekends.
