Review Room Type Availability With Front Office Operations
Guide revenue managers in a practical review of sellable room types, operational holds, and current inventory decisions.
Room type availability on a revenue screen needs an operations review when it affects a pricing or distribution decision. A room can appear available while it is held for maintenance, a group commitment, an accessibility need, or an assignment issue. The revenue manager should bring the dates and inventory view; front office operations should confirm what is currently sellable.
Prepare a short list by arrival date and room type. Include rooms sold, rooms out of service, pending changes, and any unknown count. Ask the front office leader to identify the source for each hold and whether its status has a scheduled update. The goal is a shared operating picture that supports a future assignment review.
In a fictional morning review, revenue manager Celia said, “The system shows six premium kings open for Saturday. I am considering opening them to another channel.” Front office manager Malik replied, “Two are currently marked out of service, and three sit beside the wedding block because of rooming requests. I can confirm two sellable rooms today. The maintenance lead expects to update the other two by 2 p.m.” Celia asked, “Should I close the premium king type?” Malik said, “I would keep the current sellable count at two until the maintenance update. The wedding rooms remain a request review, so I will update you if their assignment changes.” Celia recorded two rooms as the working inventory and set a 2:15 check.
Capture the decision, count, source, and review time in the daily log. For coaching, give a revenue manager an inventory screen and a front office handoff note with three different statuses. Ask them to say what can be sold now and what needs confirmation. Review whether they distinguish a room type count from a guest’s eventual room allocation.
