Qualify an AI Governance Backlog Through Workflow Discovery
A business development director can explore an overloaded AI review process without taking on legal or approval authority.
An AI governance backlog often looks like a queue problem, yet the queue may reflect unclear routing, missing criteria, or separate reviews that never meet. A business development director should qualify the work as a workflow question. General counsel, security, data governance, and business sponsors each hold part of the picture.
Start by asking what enters the process, who receives it first, and what decision each reviewer is authorized to make. Find out how many requests are waiting at each stage and where teams return incomplete submissions. The prospect may have a governance committee without an agreed way to sort requests by risk or business impact. Treat that gap as material for a workflow review and reserve legal judgments for authorized customer specialists.
In a fictional conversation, Elaine, general counsel, says, “Could your team approve the simple use cases so we can move faster?” Omar replies, “Your organization needs to retain approval authority. We can help map the handoffs and identify where reviewers need clearer information. Which teams currently review a use case, and where do requests stall?” Elaine explains that security runs a separate review after legal has already asked questions. Omar suggests a design session with both teams and two business sponsors.
The director can frame an engagement around observable process issues: intake quality, review ownership, decision records, and escalation paths. Authorized customer specialists remain responsible for legal, security, and policy conclusions. That distinction helps everyone understand the value of the working session.
For a coaching drill, draw a sample request from submission through decision. Mark each handoff, the information it needs, and the person who owns it. Then roleplay a request for an approval guarantee. A manager can score whether the response preserves the customer's authority while earning a specific workflow meeting.
