Lead a Portfolio Risk Review With an Existing Client Sponsor
A client partner can help a sponsor examine work across engagements by distinguishing confirmed risks from concerns that need investigation.
Several active engagements can obscure a problem that is visible only across the portfolio. A client partner can convene a risk review when the sponsor needs a complete view of dependencies, decisions, and client capacity. The review should distinguish facts that teams have confirmed from concerns that require further investigation.
Start by asking which outcomes matter across the work and where the sponsor sees strain. Collect current milestones, shared dependencies, upcoming client decisions, and staffing requests from each delivery lead. Present the material in a way that lets the sponsor decide what deserves attention rather than using the meeting to announce a conclusion.
In a fictional meeting, sponsor Omar says, “Every workstream says green, yet my leaders are exhausted.” Partner Grace responds, “Let us look at the commitments that draw on the same people and the decisions due in the next month. Which groups are feeling the pressure most directly?” Omar identifies finance and data teams. Grace says, “We can ask each delivery lead to confirm their demand on those teams, then use the review to decide whether sequencing or governance needs adjustment.”
Run a practice review using three fictional engagements. Create a page with shared owners, dates, and unanswered questions. Roleplay a sponsor who distrusts status colors. Review whether you named the evidence behind each concern and gave the sponsor a choice about the next investigation or decision.
