Coach a Shrink Concern Without Accusing an Associate
Separate inventory facts from suspicion and route investigation through loss prevention.
Elevated shrink after an inventory count needs controls and a fair process. A manager’s distrust of one associate is not evidence. Review receiving discrepancies, count records, and recent delivery changes, then use the authorized loss prevention path for any investigation.
In a fictional meeting, Morgan says, “Can I search their bag? Do you think they stole it?” District manager Alex replies, “The count shows shrink, and it also shows receiving discrepancies after the new delivery partner began. We have no documented performance issue for that associate. Do not search or accuse anyone. Let’s preserve the records, check receiving controls, and send the facts to loss prevention for the next step.” Morgan agrees to review the next two deliveries with a second receiver.
Coaching here is about behavior the manager controls: accurate receiving, documented exceptions, and timely escalation. It protects the employee and strengthens the evidence available to the authorized team.
Practice with a manager who wants an immediate culprit. The district manager should redirect to facts, name the investigation boundary, and set one control check. Review the written note for neutral language and a clear loss prevention owner.
Ask the manager to identify the records they will preserve before the next count. Specific documentation turns the coaching commitment into a repeatable store control.
