SDR: Finance Freeze
Earn a relevant meeting when finance has frozen new spending for enablement.
A finance freeze changes the purpose of an SDR call. The prospect may still be diagnosing a revenue problem, but spending has a separate process. Ask how ideas reach investment review, what evidence finance expects, and whether a revenue leader wants to define a problem before a budget window opens. This keeps the conversation tied to a decision.
Ben spoke with CFO Renee, who said, “We have frozen new programs through the quarter.” Ben answered, “Understood. When an exception reaches your investment review, what must the sponsor show?” Renee said she needed documented assumptions, accountable owners, and alternatives considered. Ben replied, “Would it be useful to meet with your revenue and enablement leaders to define the inputs they could validate? I am not asking you to approve spend today.” Renee suggested the vice president of revenue operations, who prepared investment materials.
In the follow-up, state the freeze plainly and propose a narrow agenda: clarify the performance question, identify baseline data, and identify the person who owns any future proposal. Avoid inserting a payback estimate to make the request urgent. A finance partner needs assumptions they can inspect; early outreach rarely has enough information to establish them.
Practice with a colleague who demands, “Give me a return number before I take a meeting.” Ask which measure the company uses in investment reviews and who maintains it. Request a conversation with the revenue owner to understand the measure’s context. Review the roleplay for unsupported savings claims and language that pressures the CFO to bypass the process. Your invitation should name the question to explore and include the finance dependency, so the internal sponsor can decide whether the conversation is timely.
