Open a Conversation About New Seller Ramp Without Promising Results
Use a ramp hypothesis to earn a discovery meeting while keeping the evidence and outcome question open.
Hiring announcements can prompt an SDR to ask about seller ramp. The useful opening connects the signal to a question about readiness, manager certification, or practice. It does not imply that the company has a problem or that a platform can deliver a particular ramp outcome.
In a fictional voicemail follow-up, SDR Bea says, “Your team has added account executives this quarter. I wanted to ask how managers decide when a new seller is ready for customer conversations. Some enablement leaders use recorded roleplays and manager reviews to make that decision more visible. Is that a priority for your onboarding owner?” The sales leader calls back and says, “We already have onboarding.” Bea replies, “I expected that. I am interested in the field handoff after onboarding. Who could tell us how managers observe readiness in the first month?”
The request is narrow, respectful, and easy for a buyer to route. It also leaves room for the buyer to explain that the current process works well.
Practice recording this message in under thirty seconds. Remove product details that do not help the listener answer the ownership question. Have a partner play a skeptical leader and ask, “Can you shorten ramp?” Respond by asking how they define readiness and which group maintains the current measurement.
