Create an assignment extension checkpoint before the end date
Give workers and managers a clear review point when a client may need more time.
An assignment nearing its end date should trigger a planned conversation. The client success manager can schedule a checkpoint that lets the client assess work remaining and lets the worker state availability. An extension remains subject to the agreed process and approvals.
Start the review early enough for the client to make a decision. Ask the manager what work remains, whether budget and scope are approved, and who confirms an extension. Ask the worker separately whether they are interested and available. Do not tell either party that an extension is certain until the responsible contacts confirm it.
CSM Farah called the project lead and said, “Miguel's assignment ends in three weeks. What work will still be open after that date?” The lead said, “We may need two more weeks for testing, but finance has not approved it.” Farah replied, “I will record that as pending. May I ask finance for a decision date and ask Miguel whether he would consider an extension if approved?” The lead agreed. Miguel later said he was available only through the following Friday.
Those separate conversations reveal whether an extension is possible before anyone makes a commitment.
Choose an account with assignments ending next month. Make a calendar entry for a client scope review and a worker availability check. Roleplay a manager who says, “Assume they can stay.” Practice responding with the end date, approval owner, and the need to ask the worker. Finish by drafting a status note that distinguishes confirmed work from a possible extension.
